I thought I would jot down a few impressions after spending a few days with the Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera (BMPCC). There are tons of reviews from much better film makers out there than me but I thought I would approach this as someone who films a lot of events and fast turn around projects.
1) This is not a low light camera. I am sure there are speedboosters and some F.95 Lenses that might make me change my mind but at 1600 ASA the image really starts to fall apart. I would almost say its unusable by anyone’s standards.
2) I havent tested RAW out but the ProRes HQ and 422 is incredible to grade/color correct. If exposed correctly you have to work extremely hard to break this cameras codec. Also I havent ventured into Davinci Resolve or LUTS but I used FCPX’s built-in log processor. It gets you decent “normal” looking footage quickly and then you can grade from there.
3)I use Micro-Four Thirds glass on my GH3, which work on the BMPCC. Its already hard to get a really wide angle with the GH3, but with the BMPCC its next to impossible with the 3X Crop Factor
So I really see this as a B-Camera for optimum light situations, or when I can set something up and take my time. I dont see myself filming a wedding ceremony or something thats mission critical.
Final Cut X , I dont mind answering questions if you have them!
Special Thanks to my uncle Al and aunt Debbie for putting up with us.
